Book Review: You and Me On Vacation by Emily Henry

You and Me On Vacation by Emily Henry book cover

AD* | TWO FRIENDS. TEN SUMMER TRIPS. THEIR LAST CHANCE TO FALL IN LOVE.

12 SUMMERS AGO: Poppy and Alex meet. They hate each other and are pretty confident they'll never speak again.

11 SUMMERS AGO: They're forced to share a ride home from college and by the end of it a friendship is formed. And a pact: every year, one vacation together.

10 SUMMERS AGO: Alex discovers his fear of flying on the way to Vancouver.
Poppy holds his hand the whole way.

7 SUMMERS AGO: They get far too drunk and narrowly avoid getting matching tattoos in New Orleans.

2 SUMMERS AGO: It all goes wrong.

THIS SUMMER: Poppy asks Alex to join her on one last trip. A trip that will determine the rest of their lives.

You and Me On Vacation is the perfect summer read, packed with incredible getaways, exotic destinations, and a sweet romance.

Poppy and Alex are unlikely best friends. She's a laid-back travel writer with a serious case of wanderlust and a vibrant vintage wardrobe. He's an uptight teacher who loves nothing more than being alone with his cat and a good book. They are both intriguing and interesting, yet they have very little in common.

This sets the stage for a 'will they, won't they' story that is as heartbreaking as it is heart-warming. From their funny in-jokes to more tender moments, it's clear that these two are perfect for each other. Despite their differences, it seems that sometimes opposites really do attract! The question is, though, will Poppy and Alex eventually find that out for themselves?

The book is told across a period of twelve years. It flicks between the present and past summer holidays, weaving the tale of Poppy and Alex's friendship - and the start of something more. Spanning multiple countries and cities as well as just years, this could easily be confusing, but it works extremely well.

This is a sweet story filled with enviable travel destinations and colourful characters. From a luxurious Tuscan villa to a questionable Canadian water taxi ride, this book follows Poppy and Alex all over the globe. In a time when overseas travel is not possible, living vicariously through their adventures definitely helps to scratch the itch!

This is a gorgeous, light read ideal for summer reading. I defy anyone not to root for Poppy and Alex!
