To find the courage to end the relationship, Josie seeks advice from new acquaintances. But she somehow manages to make an even bigger mess of her life. When Jack, Tom’s twin and her childhood friend, comes to DC to reconnect, he helps Josie get her feet back on the ground.
Just as Josie is beginning to resolve the chaos in her life, a tragic secret from her past comes back to haunt her. Before she can move forward and have a second chance at love, she must face her grief and loss.
Courage Without Grace is a journey of self-discovery, following one woman's desire to overcome her burdens and finally embrace her true self.
The main character is Josie, a young woman who is struggling to come to terms with her past. Following a tough childhood, Josie finds herself living in Washington DC, trying her best to forge a new life for herself and Tom, her childhood sweetheart. Josie and Tom's relationship is complicated yet due to their long history, she finds it near-impossible to pull away from Tom. However, Tom has plenty of secrets of his own, and with the arrival of his twin brother Jack, the past suddenly comes rushing back into their lives.
Filled with secrets of the long-buried past, Courage Without Grace embraces its characters flaws as they try their best to re-establish their lives and forge their futures. It is poignant, reflective, and highly character-driven.
Josie is complex and mysterious yet she soon understands what she must do if she will ever have a chance at happiness. She accepts her troubles and refreshingly, is willing to do what she can to overcome them. Despite its dark patches, the book also brings a sense of hope - for new beginnings, fresh starts, and a more positive future.
There are also some striking similarities between Josie's life and the author's own experiences, which help to shape the story and add a more realistic tone to the book. If you are interested in finding out more, you can read my interview with Jeannie Zokan, the author, to find out more about her life, her background, and her writing.
Introspective and contemplative, Courage Without Grace offers a fresh take and a spiritual journey of self-discovery.
