He was once called Orphan X.
As a boy, Evan Smoak was taken from a children's home, raised and trained as part of a secret government initiative buried so deep that virtually no one knows it exists. But he broke with the programme, choosing instead to vanish off-grid and use his formidable skill set to help those unable to protect themselves.
One day, though, Evan's luck ran out...
Ambushed, drugged, and spirited away, Evan wakes up in a locked room with no idea where he is or who has captured him. As he tries to piece together what's happened, testing his gilded prison and its highly trained guards for weaknesses, he receives a desperate call for help.
With time running out, he will need to out-think, out-manoeuvre, and out-fight an opponent the likes of whom he's never encountered to have any chance of escape. He's got to save himself to protect those whose lives depend on him. Or die trying...
Fast-paced and tense, The Nowhere Man is a standout thriller bound to keep you on the edge of your seat.
The story follows on from the first book in the series, Orphan X, where we were introduced to Evan and got to learn more about his life, his backstory, and his motivations. Although it was useful to know the backstory from the first book, this could also be read as a standalone.
Evan is a well-trained, highly-skilled individual, well versed in everything from weapons, close combat fighting, survival skills, hacking, and much more. As a result, it's understandable that he is more than a little surprised - and shocked - to suddenly find himself off-guard and taken prisoner. When the tables are turned, Evan finds himself in need of rescuing, yet the problem is that the Nowhere Man is used to being the rescuer. With time running out and more than one life hanging in the balance, Evan must put all his skills and training to the test if he will succeed in getting away from his captors.
The story is suspenseful and packed with twists and turns throughout. It's high-energy and more than a little gruesome at times, yet this all adds to the action. It is also good to see a more vulnerable side to Evan, explored further than in Orphan X.
Once again, a number of key loose threads are left at the end of the book. It's not a big cliffhanger, but much is left unsaid and it will be intriguing to see where Evan's journey takes him next. I can't wait to get stuck into book three!
