Book Review: Hellbent by Gregg Hurwitz

Hellbent by Gregg Hurwitz book cover

AD* | To some he was Orphan X. Others knew him as the Nowhere Man. But to Jack Johns, he was a boy named Evan Smoak. Taken from an orphanage, Evan was raised inside a top-secret government programme and trained to become a lethal weapon. By Jack. And yet for all the dangerous skill he instilled in his young charge, Jack Jones cared for Evan like a son.

But Jack knew too much about a programme that had gone rotten - he was a loose end that needed to be dealt with. But if you go after the only person who ever treated him like a human being, you can guarantee that the Nowhere Man will be coming for you. Hellbent on making things right...

High stakes and high octane, Hellbent is an action-packed thriller and another hit from bestselling author Gregg Hurwitz.

This is the third novel in the Orphan X series and it jumps right in to continue where the previous book left off. Although this could be read as a standalone, I'd definitely recommend reading Orphan X and The Nowhere Man (books one and two) first as they help to paint a fuller picture of Evan's backstory.

Although there is still plenty of action in this book, the tension takes a slightly different edge in Hellbent compared to the previous two books. Throughout the course of this book, we learn more about Evan - the person behind the unstoppable killing machine. There is a noticeably more human element to this book and it adds an intriguing new dimension to the series and the characters.

As ever, though, Hellbent is mysterious, immersive, and exciting. Evan is a great main character and unlike many other thriller protagonists, he is three-dimensional and well-rounded. You easily find yourself rooting for him and holding your breath every time he gets into a tricky situation! Without a doubt, this is a story that will suck you in and keep you reading right to the very end!

With book four already sitting on my to-read list, it certainly won't be long before I'm back in Evan's world again!

Rating: 3 stars
