5 Reasons Why Thor is the Best Avenger

Marvel comics have been around since 1939 and the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) now features 23 films, a global fanbase, and a whole host of unique characters. With so many characters across all those movies, how can you possibly pick out a favourite?

For me, the answer was simple. Look to the Avengers, arguably the MCU's biggest success story, and then go from there! Now that the universe has drawn to a natural conclusion following on from the events of Avengers: Endgame, it only felt right for me to look back and reflect on the film series that accompanied me through my teenage years and into adulthood.

Thor has always been my favourite Avenger - here's why.

1. Humour

It can be tricky for a superhero movie to balance both humour and seriousness, but the Thor franchise manages it expertly. From running gags to sarcastic one-liners, the scripts for these films are peppered with humour which comes as a refreshing change from some of the other MCU movies. My personal favourite is Ragnarok.

2. Fantasy

While all the Marvel movies contain elements of fantasy to some degree, the Thor films arguably feature it most heavily. Much of the history and background is derived from Norse mythology (Thor is the God of Thunder, his father is Odin, King of Asgard, etc) and the entire setting of Asgard is really interesting from a viewer's perspective. In short, the Thor films have helped to make old Norse mythology cool again!

3. Loki

You simply can't have a superhero without a villain, and Thor and Loki go hand-in-hand throughout the films. Loki is a brilliant, well-crafted villain and this really helps to cement Thor as a stand-out Avenger. It's also really interesting to see how the pair's relationship changes over time and how their dynamic alters from early films to later instalments.

4. Superpowers

While a lot of characters in the MCU boast a whole range of superpowers that are pretty awesome, none are as good as Thor's. From being able to summon thunder, command lightning, and even fly, no one can say that his special powers aren't incredible. Plus, with his infamous hammer Mjolnir by his side, he's pretty much invincible in a fight. Bonus superhero points!

5. Heart

Of course, it's not just about impressive superpowers. Another important part of Thor's universal appeal is the character's big heart and compassion for those around him. Thor is always one of the first Avengers to help someone in need (perhaps second only to Captain America) and throughout the films, he consistently shows kindness, empathy, and a deep-rooted love for his family.

These are just a few of the reasons why Thor is my favourite character in the MCU and why I believe he is also the best Avenger. Bring on the next time Thor graces the big screen!
